It is estimated that in Colorado, more than 10,000 adults with developmental disabilities live with caretakers who are over 60.
Section 8 Housing Vouchers in Jefferson County opened its “waitlist for getting on the wait list” for one week in 2016. One constituent entered their name on that list at that time and still has not been moved onto the waiting list one year. In February 2017, the waitlist opened for one day.
The average disability benefit is $750 per month but The average one-bedroom apartment in the Denver metro area is $1438.
We are addressing the severe need for affordable housing for adults with disabilities with thoughtful and humane solutions, starting with a studio apartment building that will house an intentional community of adults with and without developmental disabilities.
The tenants will operate the building on the model of a cooperative, with decisions made by a vote of the group as a whole.
Our first project is an apartment building with 50 units. 50% of the apartments are allocated for adults with developmental disabilities and the rest for tenants from the general population.
Our first building is meant to be a model for many more similar residences to meet the ever-growing need for adults with disabilities to have “a home of their own”.
